how long have you been a PD at this institution?
since 1991 – so 25 years!
how many students are currently in your program(s)?
We have 85 students in our baccalaureate program and 6 in
our MsAT professional program. (We are no longer accepting
students into our baccalaureate program, and the last
baccalaureate student will graduate in 2019. Our first class
of students in our MsAT professional program started this
Do you teach any classes? If so, which one(s)?
I teach several classes in our undergraduate program,
including one on orthopedic examination and another senior-level course that focuses on clinical decision-making. In
our master’s degree program, I’ll be teaching a class called
Connecting Policy to Practice, which is just what the title
Do you use the BOC self Assessment Exam(s) to assist your
students in preparing for the exam? how?
We tell students about the BOC self-Assessment Exams as a
possible tool to use for their exam preparation.
how do you prepare your students for the BOC exam?
In the fall of the students’ senior year, we spend 1 class
discussing the BOC exam. This conversation includes the
mechanics of how to apply and register, how the exam is
constructed and scored, available preparation resources,
and what to do after the exam is passed to actually become
certified. We also review the BOC standards of Professional
Practice, which is introduced
early and discussed throughout
the program. students also take
a 100-item, computer-based
multiple choice exam, first
individually and then again in a
small group. The exam content
is based on classes that they’ve
had in our program and helps
trigger their memories about
potential BOC exam subject
Beyond these structured experiences, we don’t do any other
program-initiated exam preparation. The students sort out
what works best for them, with some organizing themselves
into study groups and others preparing individually.
What study materials do you recommend to your students?
We let students know about what study materials are
available, such as the BOC’s self-Assessment Exams and
sample questions. students are encouraged to use the BOC
Practice Analysis as a framework for studying. We also keep
a folder for each student that includes all of their examinations
from their professional courses, and they are welcome to use
these for review.
Please provide some tips for how you prepare your
students for entering the real world (e.g. completing the
BOC paperwork post-exam, state licensure/registration/
certification, nPI numbers).
Well, in a bow to human nature, I know that telling students
once about each of these things doesn’t work! We weave
