Peter Koehneke, MS, ATC
Peter Koehneke, MS, ATC is Program Director and Athletic
Trainer, Athletic Training Program, at Canisius University in
Buffalo, New York.
1) How long have you been a PD at this institution?
2) How many students are currently in your program(s)?
There are 30 students in our program.
3) Do you teach any classes? If so, which one(s)?
I teach Therapeutic Modalities and Lab, Diagnostic
Techniques and Lab.
4) Do you use the BOC Self Assessment Exam(s) to
assist your students in preparing for the exam? How?
The last year students use the study mode, and then we have
them complete the exam mode. Each student selects an
Athletic Trainer (AT) mentor and the mentor is provided with
the results to assist the student in preparation for the exam.
We also encourage them to purchase a second exam mode
4-6 weeks before their actual exam date.
5) How do you prepare your students for the BOC exam?
We have implemented high risk exams into our clinical
courses based on the material from the previous semester.
The exam score is a portion of their grade and must be
passed to continue in the clinical progression. The final clinical
course includes a comprehensive exam.
The student is mentored by an AT with multiple sessions,
and we have begun a formal review with an additional course
meeting day for the senior clinical course. We encourage the

7) Please provide some tips for how you prepare your
students for entering the real world (e.g. completing
the BOC paperwork post-exam, state licensure/
registration/certification, NPI numbers).
In our Administration course, students are taken to the
National Plan & Provider Enumeration System (NPPES)
website and shown how to obtain their NPI number. The
instructor also helps them to login to their BOC Central TM
profile and demonstrates how to enter CE activity and
explains the CE categories. State requirements are also

I believe all PDs relish having alumni return to campus or
